Joel K. Bohmart
Joel K. Bohmart, a principal of the firm, is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and has over 40 years experience in practicing law. His law firm is more than 25 years old. Before forming Bohmart & Sacks P.C., he practiced law as a partner in Upham, Meeker & Weithorn, a predecessor of the law firm, Baer & Marks and later as a partner in Hays, Porter, Spanier & Curtis.
Mr. Bohmart’s experience encompasses a broad range of legal problems including complex and garden variety litigation in the federal, state and appellate courts, intellectual property, especially trademarks, domain names and copyrights, bankruptcy including reorganizations of companies, and commercial and real property transactions One of his cases established new law in the field of international copyrights. Itar Tass Russian News Agency v Russian Kurier, Inc., 153 F 3d 82 (2d Cir. 1998).
His experience in transactional work has aided him in handling complex business litigation. He has represented public and private companies in acquisitions, reorganized numerous companies in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has a solid grounding in securities law. His real estate background encompasses the purchase and sale of commercial buildings in Manhattan as well as the purchase and sale of cooperatives and condominiums.
He is member of the New York County Lawyers Association and has been admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Second and Third Circuits.
Mr. Bohmart was formerly a member of the Committee of Unfair Competition and Trademarks of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and was on the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. In addition, he was an active participant in Community Law Offices, a program, which was affiliated with the Legal Aid Society and was responsible for representing indigents in criminal cases.
